Due to a higher risk of complications young patients with severe focusing errors are unsuitable for laser vision surgery. These patients can be helped with implantable contact lens surgery.
The procedure can be thought of as inserting a contact lens inside the eye where it stays permanently. Very severe short sightedness can be corrected using this technique.
The results are excellent with more than 98% of patients or better attaining the legal standard of driving with the majority achieving normal 20/20 or 6/6 vision. Less than 1% of patients experience complications which reduces their vision to a level which is significantly worse than what they had before surgery.
Specific concerns include development of cataracts over a period of years. Cataracts can be treated very effectively with more than 95% of patients achieving the legal standard of vision for driving.
